Re: Early-life crisis; considering moving to Vegas to take a shot

You have a 150k life roll, but how much of it are you wiling to commit to poker?

I would say work for one more year, and whatever you can save goes into your poker roll, ~30k I think? It gives you a year where you can play and study the game with no pressure, albeit secondary to your job, with the intent of making it your profession. If you can get away for periods of time or use vacation then take advantage of it. It'll force you to "grind it out" at your job for a year...cuz you can't just play poker when you feel like it all the time either. Plus work would probably be slightly more bearable knowing you have an exit strategy and a date circled, and a year really isn't so long. It's pretty much a win/win/win/win situation.

If poker didn't work out for whatever reason, how likely are you to land another job around the 100k+ range? I think that is probably the biggest thing in if/when/how you should go about the whole thing

Yeah, me too. Having that much money would provide me more free time and not work in an office, but I would hope that he had other outside hobbies he wanted to do or something.

It was once said: "No one with a <500 post thread makes it in vegas"

Hopefully OP just took 10k to vegas for a week or two of degen gambling, hookers, and blow.

OP - any chance of you being able to teach at a university? Probably looking at $80k - $100k per year but daily work demands should be much less and you've got every holiday weekend plus xmas break, spring break and the 8 - 10 weeks in the summer to head to Vegas. Probably not really bad for the resume either if you could pull it off.

there's no way you'll make more money playing poker than as a lawyer. just go to vegas for 2 weeks, quit your law firm, and find another career path

Re: Early-life crisis; considering moving to Vegas to take a shot

OP, You've probably already made a decision but I'll add my 2 cents anyway. Don't leave your job yet, take a 2-week vacation, bring 25K with you, and see what happens. If it's all you imagined and more, then seriously consider the move. Or, you may realize that it's a fun hobby, but not something to devote your life to.

Also, with that kind of savings, get yourself into WSOP ME. If you run deep there then I think you know what you need to do.

I'm curious what OP's wife thought of his plan. I think what he may have needed to think about was if he implemented his plan and wife left him (I give it a 40% chance) then he will no longer have that $150k bankroll.

Thought he did. Just reread OP first post. Looks like he talked about marriage but isn't actually married.

Re: Early-life crisis; considering moving to Vegas to take a shot

Old post but I figure I throw in my 2 cents.

Everyone glamorizes the poker lifestyle like playing poker for a living is like being a professional athlete in the majors/big leagues. In reality, when you start out (and sadly where most people end up) is scratching the bottom of the single A minor leagues. These athletes and the low limit Vegas 'pros' are making tiny money and live below the poverty rate. Maybe not that bad, but they are making like $30K to $40K a year putting in major hours and then extra practice for ballplayers and studying for poker players hours ON TOP of that.

A few, and I mean a select few, make it up to the AA level, even less to AAA level, and a handful reach the majors and actually have a good run. Just like those players that make it to the majors, not all of them stay there for more than a year or 2-3 years before the majors adjust to their swing or pitch and they get demoted again.

I recommend OP and those in a similar situation take a vacation or if they need more than that, do some long term travel to re-prioritize their life. OP mentioned he's got a great girl. I would talk to her before doing something major. A lot of time you need to just vent and it helps even a little.

I know plenty of people, myself included, who would prioritize great girl over great job in a heart beat. OP should see what he has in front of him before focusing on what he doesn't have.
