Drought -- and neighbors -- press Las Vegas to conserve water Drought -- and neighbors -- press Las Vegas to conserve water

Good article. Thanks for posting.

I couldn't help noticing that the LA Times neglects to mention all the water that gets wasted by piping it from Lake Mead to the Imperial Valley so that Southern California agribusiness can grow crops in the middle of the desert. Nevertheless, local lawn bans, swimming pool bans, cutting off Lake Las Vegas, etc. would all be welcome policies from an environmental standpoint. Getting these things done politically is sadly another matter.

It should be against the law to have a private lawn in Vegas. Xeriscaping only. I'm all for more golf courses, though. I'm strange like that.

Golf courses are among the most responsible water users, and getting more advanced all the time.

agreed. My uncle was head of maintenance for a chain of 3 golf courses on the Florida pan handle for years. The techniques he used at his home that were learned from the golf course, were quite impressive.

Golf courses might be responsible water users but they're also unnecessary water users.

I don't know how it is now, but they did when I spent a summer there about 5 years ago. They had regulations on which neighborhoods could water their lawns on which day. Had to pay a fee to fill your pool, all sorts of different little rules like that. I am from ohio and that was very foreign to me so i remember it pretty well.

Yes. Florida has a major water crisis. Its aquifer is becoming depleted from overuse, resulting in sinkholes now and potentially much worse later.

This video sums it up

we live on a water world... I use what I want here in Vegas even though most of my yard is desert landscaping and quite water friendly.

one thing that surprised me is how little my water bill actually is here in vegas... specially when I compare it to so cal, nor cal and tennessee...

Most golf courses try to manage their water consumption as much as possible as it is a cost to them and everyone wants to keep costs down.

If we compute our water usage the same way CA computes theirs, we only use 124 Gal/person/day. compare that to the 184 per day in CA.....

LVVWA has been tweeting at the times this morning, a little miffed I might add.

Which is a big part of the problem. Easiest way to get people to use less water is start charging them more for it.
