Poker Church - Meets Every Sunday 2-5PM, come talk hands/theory Poker Church - Meets Every Sunday 2-5PM, come talk hands/theory

As I'm getting more and more coaching and more and more hours under me, I'm starting to see the value in having a group of people (a braintrust, if you will) of people that I can talk about hands with, away from the tables.

So, I'm willing to put forth the effort to organize a "Poker Church" - a Sunday afternoon gathering of locals/visitors to talk about hands, poker theory, etc. If someone wants to help me find a location (maybe a quiet coffee shop with a large table?), I'm willing to commit to being there every Sunday at X p.m. and meet with anyone that wants to show up. I think we can all improve our games by dedicating just one hour (or whatever) to talk theory with others.

If you want to help, please PM me and we can exchange phone numbers. Or post location suggestions in this thread - a coffee shop that is slow on Sundays and with a large table would be ideal. I'll bring some speed cloth and decks to work out hands.

Edit:

Poker Church - Every Sunday, come between 2-5PM
Perk Up Coffee - 11370 Southern Highlands Parkway

Just north of where Dean Martin meets the Parkway

A weekly, casual gathering to talk hands, theory and games around town. No set agenda, we just see where the conversation takes us. To fit most people's schedule, we do a rolling start, come by any time between 2PM and 5PM and someone will be there.

PM me with any questions or send me your cell number and I'll get you on the txt alerts for the meetings.

I think this is a good idea and is very kind of you to offer to start such a group, Jim.

I only subscribe to the Church of What's Happening Now as far as church goes, however, I could find myself some time in the winter to make an appearance and share my fishy views on things

I wish you all the best in getting your group started.

Just so you'll know, there already are 2 (I think that they both are still going) groups like the one you are describing. There is the Wednesday Poker Discussion Group that is thriving both live and online. This is a fantastic group of people who include some of the best and brightest poker players in Vegas.

Live they meet at 2:30 every Wednesday afternoon (with folk showing up starting at around 2:00 for lunch - good food there!) at Ricardo's.

Online they are at https://wpdg.info/

There is also a Monday Night No Limit Discussion group. They meet at Stake Out on S. Maryland Parkway starting at 7:30pm (again, good food there). I haven't heard anything from them in a while, and haven't been in town the past couple of months, but hopefully they are still going strong.

Lee

Religion is poison...

change the name to protect the innocent.

Would this be to pray to the Poker Gods?

Before you guys make a mockery of the Lord you might want to consider all the implications. They don't comp grape vodka in hell.

One of the positive sides of my divorce is that it got me back in touch with my faith. I attend services on a regular basis and rarely start my day without saying a lengthy prayer.

The "church" selection for the name is merely allegory for the Sunday selection - don't take it too seriously. I envision holding this around 3-4pm when people are likely done with their Sunday mornings.

Now you've offended the Seventh Day Adventists.

One of the side effects of my marriage was attending a new church and I have been pretty religious about it.

I would show up when I'm in town. I'm Jewish so Sundays are typically free.

Could have been worse. OP could have termed it a Poker Congress.

It seems like this idea might have legs - I have heard from a few people and that's good.

If you've sent me your phone number then I've already made contact with you. I'm targeting next Sunday 9/28 as the first meeting, assuming I can find a place that's suitable. If you're still interested, feel free to PM me.

First Meeting of Poker Church on Sunday Sept. 28, 2014 at 3PM!
We will be meeting at Perk Up Coffee Shop
11370 Southern Highlands Pkwy, Ste 100
Las Vegas, NV 89141
Yelp link: http://www.yelp.com/biz/perk-up-coffee-shop-las-vegas

It's a nice location that has a table large enough for a few people. I'm keeping a loose attitude to this and going to let the group be self-defining. If you don't think Sundays will be a good day long-term, then come to the first meeting and suggest another day/time. The group can also choose a different location too - maybe someone wants to host? Either way, we can consider this the kick-off and let's see where the group goes.

Bring a hand or two to discuss, or some theory you want to share and we'll all go from there. I'll bring two decks of cards so that we can see the hands we're discussing (I'm a visual learner).

If you've sent me your number (as a few of you have) I'll send some text message reminders. Feel free to PM me your number if you want to be added to the list.

Good, glad to hear it! This place is basically across the entire valley for me But I think it's a good location with a nice table there, so it should fit the need (at least for the first meet).

The new exit for Cactus off the 15 makes it even faster to get to Southern Highlands nowadays. Should be pretty easy for anyone taking the freeway.

Indeed it is VERY convenient now. I'm hoping that once people stop by and see how easy it is to get to, it will encourage people to come back. While I live nowhere near there, Southern Highlands is still pretty accessible.

Not sure if I can make it. Will have to check the NFL schedule to see what games are in the afternoon.

I love it down here. It was an accident that our first rental when we moved to Vegas ten years ago happened to be in the fledgling community of Southern Highlands. It's really grown into a great place to live, super quiet, full of young families and a spattering of legitimate high rollers who primarily live on the golf course. Great parks, great walking paths, the HOA isn't too oppressive and is relatively cheap with assessments and they give a lot back in improvements and community events.

One the BEST kept secrets in SoHi is this new Italian restaurant with a terrible name but simply amazing food, "Spagetty Western", in the Smith's shopping center. I'm an ex-New Yorker and they have some of the greatest mom and pop 'Red Sauce style' Italian food I've ever had, and that's saying ALOT. Anyone venturing down here should check it out. They also have a seriously good selection of imported meats and cheeses to take for a quick lunch or game time snack platter.
