Yeah, as in really old. I don't ever remember a time when you could just sit a bar and order free drinks without putting money in a VP machine. The only difference now is that the machine tracks your play rather than the bartender.
But even this "new" development isn't that new. When I was in Vegas last July, I met up with a friend at Caesar's who wanted to play VP as we talked. We put c-notes in our respective machines and were playing max coin, but we still had a problem with getting drinks because apparently we were talking too much and not playing fast enough. When we tried to order another round, the bartender told us that our lights had turned red and he had to wait for the machine's light to turn green again before he could do so.
