Greetings Vegas poker players, I'm considering moving to Las Vegas to pursue my dream of stand up comedy. I've been doing it for about 8 years now as a hobby.
I lived in Vegas for sixteen months from 2017-18. During that time I did some comedy at open mics and even got on a showcase for nbc at the LA comedy club at the strat. I thought taking comedy serious was an oxymoron I never got a manager or agent. When talking with comics in town and asking for advice the best thing someone told me was to quit my day job. At the time I was unwilling to be a starving artist but now I'm ok with that.
I supported my self with kitchen jobs in vegas biking or busing from work to open mics everyday I could. When the city opens back up how likely are people going to be willing to see comedy? I understand that all the big names at Mirage are selling out all the time but do any of you ever go to local comedy shows? Do you have a favorite local comedian? I know some people who run shows but I don't want to be advertising if I'm not supposed to.

Why can't you pursue your dream at your current location? If you're going to be a successful comic, you're going to have to travel the states.

I expect that SouthPoint will return to a weekly comedy show, Dirty @ 12:30, which is free, and, consequently well attended. Some of their comics are quite good, and announce other venues they will be playing soon in town. Others are not good at all. I may attend once in 2 months, if playing poker at SouthPoint. Ever do one of those shows ?

I also expect that Brad Garrett's venue at the MGM will re-open when possible.

I have no idea about whether clubs will open any time soon.

Many years ago, I did manage to see a line up one night (Comedy Store at the Dunes) that, iirc, included Roseanne Barr, Jim Carrey, Paul Rodriguez, Louie Anderson (?), headlined by Argus Hamilton. At the time, U had heard only of Paul Rodriguez.)

Good luck.

Dirty at 1230 is great, if you can get in there do that, if you want open mics there are a ton around town, one of my best friends is in the open mic scene, if you are too ill give you a hint, hes the angriest person around. But they have mics about everyday of the week, sunday is a big day, used to have goldmine then noreens which is a cool spot, Tuesday have champagnes at like midnight and rebar before that so you can hit two mics on those nights I know for sure, then theres several others, id say go to one of those, its all the same people at every one, talk to bruce at champagnes or some of the guys at noreens they can get you hooked into the local scene. It is pretty cliquey but I bet most areas of the country are pretty similar. They will be firing off as soon as they are legally allowed to I am sure.

Everytime im in vegas for poker or gambling I always make it a point to go to some shows, a lot of the times im the only non comic there but its cool, just a place to practice and hone your craft you know. My favorite locals are probably thai rivera, mia moore and bruce purell in that order. Hand full of people I don't know their name I also really like though

Thought that was a subliminal CoVid reference ....

Thanks for the open mic venue tips, I appreciate a good comic. I'll check them out sometime.

My city is skipped over by most big names. Someone tried opening a comedy club and it was open for a month.

Bruce was the person who told me to quit my job. At an open mic I bombed really hard and when I got off stage he came up to me and said " Don't worry man your stuff is funny and will work in clubs just do the self deprecating stuff not the weird observation stuff."
