Question on the Cosmopolitan - WTF? Question on the Cosmopolitan - WTF?

Not too long ago I received an email from a guy that just got hired on as a host at the Cosmopolitan. In the bottom of the email it had his contact info and it said: Cosmopolitan - Just the right amount of wrong

Please tell me that is not their slogan

Why do you need to be told that?

Just the Right Amount of Wrong

Wow. Just wow.

This hotel is going to end poorly and it isn't even open yet . . .

Because their slogan will make or break them, and iamhereurnot doesn't like it?

You don't think it sets a certain tone for the hotel and the crowd it will attract?

The greater issue is that a poor choice like this is often a sign of bad management and other fundamental issues that haven't been addressed.

It's like a donk that wins a massive pot with 72o at a table filled with PStars pros and doesn't know any better. Sure, he feels like a pro in that moment but there's other issues there that need to be addressed . . . this slogan is a 72o capped on all streets . . .

You don't think the guys who made that commercial know that, too? They certainly follow a strategy with that, though I have no clue if it's a good or bad one.

I think they're targeting the Hard Rock and Palms crowd, which I have no problem with. Everything I've seen in that hotel tells me it's going to be a fantastic property. The issue they will have is that they're starting a hotel without a database (for casino player's) so it's going to be hard to for them to develop and bring in clientele without a great deal of help.

I know they're doing a "Total Rewards" type program, where every dollar you spend on property gets tallied back into your comps, be it shopping, dining, clubbing, gambling, whatever. So that's kinda cool.

Well, yes Captain Obvious, of course they know, that's the problem!

Someone in the ownership had to have looked at this and said, "I love it!". That's the kind of judgement that concerns me and why I think it will end poorly.

I hope you're right.

If I were to handicap this, I see an Aladdin situation where someone will come in and revamp the place and re-position it as something else entirely. I give it about 5 years for that to happen.

Honestly, I don't think there will be any need for re-vamping. The hotel is also going to greatly benefit from it's location and high visibility. As well as the fact that all other City Center hotels not named Aria don't have a casino.

Afaik, Cosmopolitan has a lot of money behind it, so unless they tank worse than Aria, they'll be ok.

I respect & appreciate your insight, so not trying to start anything, but couldn't you have said these same things about the Aladdin?

Vegas, like most other things in marketing, is all about positioning and going after segments that make sense. You can't just survive on a Strip location alone. The tried & true Vegas model has always included a showroom and top-flight cuisine and I think convention space is also in the mix there (although there are some exceptions). I don't think they have any of these, or do they?

Trust that they know more about their property and how to market it to their desired demographic than you do. Maybe the place isn't for you, which is fine. Maybe your violent reaction to the slogan means that it's working.

They have one of the more interesting top-flight restaurant selections out there. Not sure what their showroom situation is, but they are launching with a Coldplay/Jay-Z/Black Eyed Peas concert so they must have something. Convention space, no idea.

Since they have a "Convention Sales Team", they prolly have convention space as well..

Just looked at their rooms, terrace studio looks really nice, but unfortunately comes only with a king bed.

I think the Aladdin concept was all wrong, so there's that...

It's all yet to be proven either way, but like I said, I think the property has some fantastic things going for it.

To be clear, I'm not saying that they're going to revamp overnight. Again, I put the over/under at 5 years.

Meeting/convention space is set at 150k sq. ft:

Not sure about the showroom space. I know Brandon Flowers from the Killers will perform on the pool deck when it opens on December 15th; Black Eyed Peas will perform on said deck on NYE.

As far as their marketing goes, I think they are dong a great job of it. They have a growing presence on Facebook and Twitter, and recently had a nice spot on the Mad Man season finale.

They are also linked up to Marriot Hotel Rewards, I think the RJ said this gives them access to a 52 million customer database.

Of course many of that database wont visit the U.S much less Vegas and of those that do, perhaps they will not be big gamblers.

However in the current climate of each dept having to turn a profit, this database will be a huge helping hand in marketing the property and getting footfall.

They owe me 2 nights for keeping me awake at the Aria for 2 nights running with their beeping construction trucks. If that would have been people partying and making that racket the cops would have hauled them off to jail.

Hey, I fall into this category. I hope they send me some free room offers...

I don't see much wrong with that slogan. It's not great, but it's also not mind numbingly stupid. It's just rather cliche. I think early reviews and word of mouth are far more important anyways.

Accessibility makes it a better bet than Aria anyways.

Is it going to have a poker room?

I'm fine with the slogan, it has it's own thread on 2+2 so it has that going for it. I don't recall such a reaction about 'Words will fail you' and I kind of liked that commercial (just really liked the piano in it...and that smile at the very end).
