Your poker comps double as a line pass, even if it's just for $1. Alternatively just walk past the line and ask the hostess if there's room at the bar - if there is they'll let you in, and you pay at the bar.
Comparing strip buffets within the same price bracket is far along a matter of individual taste. The Cosmo's for example, is 'fancy' compared to Bellagio - but I don't care much for the flavors of the elegant little courses they offer, so I favor the B (poker comps galore play in, of course) even though the quality may be slightly lower. Quality and execution vary over the seasons, sometimes even over the course of the week.
A more relevant comparison would be a medium-low end Strip casino sit-down eatery, like China Poblano or Holsteins at the Cosmo, the Bellagio cafe, Mon Ami Gabi at Paris Paris, etc.
I can't say I'm familiar with all of these, but if you consider that a) $4 for a soft drink or a cup of coffee has become standard (ouch), and that b) a reasonable tip at a buffet should be close to half of a sit-down restaurant tip, to me $30 - $40 does not seem unreasonable for a varied buffet experience, even if I would never inhale 4k - 5k calories in a seating.
