Do we try to beat the checkout crowd at say 10:30am and if we don't how late should we wait to leave at night, is 4pm a really bad time (driving into the sun?). Also I drive a manual so I pretty much hate traffic more than the usual. Thanks, and if there is anything interesting happening this weekend please let me know. My friends and I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Even in this economy? I think last time I left around 11 and it wasn't too bad. Though someone else was driving.

the one and only time i drove to cali from vegas, we left at like 10pm, and we spent about 45mins-1 hour idling on the highway. plus a lot of slow driving. i think sundays suck no matter what.

Celtics-Lakers Game 5 is on Sunday at 5pm. Lakers fans will be in town to watch the game and head back to L.A. late in the evening.

No. At least not to LA. More like 8 hours in "holy hell that's the worst I've ever seen it." You can leave at noon and it will suck, but not 8 hours minimum suck.

Howdy. Looking at 2017 equivalent question. Specifically ...

I'm driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles (headed to Commerce) on a Wednesday in June. When is the best time to leave LV to avoid the worst that LA traffic offers (and hopefully not get snarled in LV mess too)? Hoping to hear an early window and a late window.

On the return trip - Saturday - best time to leave LA to go back to LV?

Thank you for the advice. Rush Hour in San Antonio lasts approximately 45 minutes, so I'm not used to 'real' traffic.

leave Sunday at 7am at the latest... and you're still going to hit some back up. I would never leave anytime after than until 7pm 8-pm at night, specially on a holiday weekend.
but I have a special aversion to congestion.

if leaving on a weds, you can leave vegas anytime after 7am , that will put you into socal after the westbound rush-hour traffic which is heaviest from 6am to 9am.

for the return trip to vegas on a saturday, you can leave at anytime.

you should always check google for traffic prior to leaving on both segments, if there is an accident or other event (fire in cajon pass) you should adjust your times accordingly. any accident between baker and barstow on i-15 will cause major back-ups and delay no matter what time you leave.

^^ This. I'm probably even more nitty, actually. I wake up at about 5.30, and I'm in the car and on the road by about 6.15, and there's hardly ever any traffic. Even leaving at the end of Labor Day Weekend was no problem when you leave this early.

If you're leaving anytime after like, 9, you're in for _at least_ 30-45 minutes of backup as you get near state line, and obviously it'll be more the later you leave.

Leaving LV on a Wednesday won't be a problem this side of the Cajon Pass.

Depending on where you're going in LA... you do realize Google Maps will let you plug in a future day and hour and give you the historical average traffic on your route?

Saturdays coming toward Las Vegas, be north of the Cajon by 5-6 PM at the latest or you will be in the soup.

Also, pro tip for Memorial Day weekend Mondays southbound... bring food and drinks, likely as not you will get mired in stopped traffic at Primm, and Primm has been known to run out of food at such times...

Actually I only knew about Google Maps current traffic. I did not realize they predicted future traffic based on averages. I will look for that now though, thanks!
