If you've never been, find an online menu. It's not for everyone. I found it to be ugh, lots of heavy and greasy stuff.

I don't like hash house. Oddly enough I really liked cafe at the D fresh and the place isn't too busy.

Stay at Main Street Station, brunch at Main Street Station. The Cal not a bad second choice, but a bit dumpier. It is connected to MSS by a skyway for your brunch/brewery pleasure.

Thanks. What makes MSS good for brunch? I am looking for the spot with the best bang for my buck!

It's one of the better buffets in Vegas, and by far the cheapest one that is good. Lots of Hawaiians at both Cal and MSS, so some nice Asian options on the buffet, even at breakfast.

Right on, what are some other good spots to eat/drink at downtown?

To drink, Downtown Cocktail Room but those are higher end. To eat, Carson Kitchen is considered one of the better restaurants in Vegas if you're into their type of food (Gastropub).

If you want cheaper drinks, pop into a casino and play some video poker at a bar IMO. For cheap eats, I hear good things about California Hotel's specials.

What are the rules for drinking on Fremont Street? Can you walk around with a open handle/40?

I would recommend getting the 9.99 prime rib special at the California. You get a baked potato, soup, salad, big piece of prime rib and cherries jubilee ice cream for like ten bucks.

Umm for some things to do downtown, go for a walk down Fremont and check out the container park, there is a really good bar in there called Oak and Ivy. Also, a bit further down is Atomic Liquors which is decent too...

For a quick late night eat, I think it was already mentioned but Pizza Rock is IMO the best Pizza in all of Las Vegas, strip included.

Plaza has really good odds on video poker and table games..

I was downtown the night of the 11th, my son and DIL ended up with a room at Oasis at Gold Spike. The room was a basic room, not bad not great. For the price it was pretty darn good. It is one block off Freemont and we were not worried at all. The main problem is on Saturday night that entire place was packed, it was crazy inside and out. I guess they provide ear plugs but up in the room we did not really hear much of anything even though the back yard and inside were going crazy with music, dancing and drinking. It was like a night club (to a lessor extent). I found the place from watching one of Andrew Neeme's early VLOGs, he said it was one of his favorite spots to just hang and have a beer. Pretty sure he would not be there on a Sat night though.

Play Sigma Derby at the D. Thing is upstairs right next to the cocktail waitress service station, so you get great service, and the game is the ultimately silly low-roller game.

Spoiler:

Get a Chicago style pizza and craft beer at the Chicago Brewing Co. inside Four Queens

Play uncapped $1/2NL at Golden Nugget (actually a pretty profitable game, best $1/2 in Vegas, imo).

Also at the D just a few feet down from Sigma Derby - they've got a Murder Mystery Dinner show.

It's very low budget and the comedy is very lame. But it can still be very fun if you are at all interested. And it's scheduled early, like 5 or 6 I think so you can get out of there and still have your full evening available.

If you go there alone as a youngish guy, pretty much everybody will suspect you of being one of the actors because nobody goes to these things alone, so if you want to embrace that, you can get a lot of entertainment value.

Does this game usually have a ton of straddling?

Not that a ridic amount of it that I recall, though it's just 1/2, so I may not have noticed. IIRC, they do the "Downtown Straddle" that is a botton straddle were action skips the blinds, goes around and the skips the BTN to have the blinds act, and then comes back to the BTN. Pretty good ultimate position for a $4 straddle.

I also once saw a guy who sit with about $500 in chips and $20K in cash one time. Not the Duke of Fremont street, this was a guy with a big beard.

I had a lot of fun roaming around to the spots mentioned. GN has a great poker room but wtf happened to binions? No vibe, flavor or otherwise. There is so much unused space on the casino floor but there is a rinky dink "poker room" with 4 tables or so in the pit. Laughable and sad for such a historic poker spot.

Yup. There is a reason I didn't mention Binion's. I played there for about half an hour with the half-stack nits to check it off my bucket list, and left as soon as I won a hand to put me positive for the session. Only time I've been there since is to cut through the casino to get back to MSS via more air conditioning than the street route.
