Not only which one is safer for the seller, but also which method is more popular, and thus something that buyers are expecting as an option.

Photos and whatnot help a little bit, but as you're relatively unknown there's not all that much you can do. Chances are no one is going to be shipping large sums to you up front, so you may be asked to send first. Of course you've been around longer than the guy who showed up 6 months ago, which helps a little.

Personally I try to avoid doing business with unknowns altogether and stick to forum regs, the flake/scammer factor here is really bad. But then again, you're just selling used books and not Mac Pro laptops. I'd say take a few photos, piece them out, and give a clean screen name they can ship to. See what happens.

If they get all huffy puffy then obviously something is wrong. A guy w/a clean 2p2 record and that's on the up and up would have 0 problems sending you some sales or a stake he received that went well etc. Join date and post counts help too but aren't the end all way to know if someone's a scammer. People can amass post counts in POG and BBV etc.

You're never safe from scammers unless you don't do any transactions at all. For a single user, I'm not sure that Stars or FTP is better than the other. There are a lot of threads in the Zoo you might be interested in reading. They might help you come to your own conclusion.
