How to get the most out of a coaching session

I get a 1 hour mentor session once a week with a professional. Normally we go through holdem manager and look at the biggest losing hands i played since the last session and discuss the mistakes, what I should have done differently and anything else I bring up. After looking through these hands, if there is time left I fire up some tables and he watches me play and i ask him questions as i play etc.

Is there any advice you can give to get the most out of a session? should I do things while I'm playing to bring to the sessions other than marking a few hands I found hard? or would it be a good use of the time to play a session on 1 table, filter the hands by whether I VP$iP'd and ask him to go through it and say what I should do on each street and why? or to look at any leaks from that session?

I get a lot out of the sessions, but since its only an hour a week, I want to make sure I use the time as well as possible.

I wouldn't ignore big pots that you win either, but it looks like you guys have a good setup going.

I would consider recording some of your play regularly while you're not getting coaching and perhaps using up to 30 minutes of that to review during your extra time, instead of hitting the table live.

However, it really depends on what level you're at, how you play during coaching sessions versus regular sessions (ideally about the same) and your learning style.

Try to take as many notes as possible during your sessions when you are not getting coached so you can bring up trouble spots that seem to come up often for you. For instance- playing strong draws out of position against diff player types, raising ak/aq in position and getting called in 3 spots and missing flop, playing against fish (even in position that donk flop, turn and river on you when you have marginal hand, playing postflop with hands like tt and jj against good players etc.... If you realized situation occur often and aren't really comfortable in those spots, take the initiative and bring the spots to your coach so you aren't wasting 10-15 min just looking over coolers--- although the big pots thing I do with my coach and students too if there are no other pressing issues. But think about what your game lacks and be proactive.

I always make sure I sleep well the day before and drink tons of water since slight dehydration can lead to lowered mental ability.
Also, try and make tough spots over the course of the week.
If your coach isn't giving you home work then He/she isn't doing a good enough job! I ask my coach for things I should work on each week. Take notes and ask questions about what you need to work on.

Re: How to get the most out of a coaching session

I recently started getting some coaching myself. and my sessions are pretty similar. My first session we did a database review, and alot of my numbers were pretty close, but a few things definitely needed some tweaking. The next step was a sweat session, so he could see my play and thought process. Then i mark hands for the next session, and we discuss and go over them, and he will usually introduce some new info, new things to incorporate, and things to work on for the next session.

I try to take as many notes as possible, but sometimes it is hard if it is during a sweat session or something. He did record a couple of the lessons, so maybe you could ask your coach to do this also.

One thing that has been super helpful for me is using Leakbuster. i run it after every session, and it is very accurate, and gives nice detailed info that i can then take to my coach if i have questions. it can definitely help you hyper focus on the areas you are struggling with. i recommend it if you haven't tried it. i still have a ton to work on, but it for sure has pointed me in the right direction.
