It's really tough to say without more information, but if you haven't had any profitable success in poker, it's hard to say any % is a bad deal for you in the short term. Long term, as long as it's not too prohibitive, you should be getting a fair deal (players often overestimate their future success and are too nitty giving up long term %s when they aren't winning and someone good offers to help them win... just make sure you lock them into giving you value if you're giving them potential value).
If it's $$ for coaching, then you need to really take a look at the coach and their qualifications. Reviews from others, their own success at the tables, their reputation in the community and purchase a preview session before you buy any big package or lock into some sort of a longer term arrangement.
