If you're a 10 year losing player you shouldn't be playing $33 tournaments until you've proved you're a winner at smaller stakes, not just moving up off the back of a lucky bink when you have an extensive history of losing

tournament poker has an insane amount of variance

Based on what you said, OP, you are not afraid of getting honest advice:

* If you REALLY tried hard 10 years and don't win at poker, then quit. But this advice is useless, i have never seen anybody quit even those who perhaps "should" are the last to quit... that's what makes this game profitable for the rest of us....

Seems like you didn't ever really try hard, but i can tell you it is very easy if you do it the hard way... and very hard if you try to do it too ez.

Here is my plan that not only works in theory, but has worked with a lot of people in practice:

DONT PLAY TOURNAMENTS and if u love them, play the lowest limits...but if you want the least variance, play cash games

1) Play the LOWEST limit possible (since u haven't beaten anything so far)

2) Only move up when you have beaten a limit for at least 100k with a winrate less than 5bb/100 or 50k hands with a winrate higher than 5bb/100 .

3) Make sure you have at least 30 buyins for each limit and move down when you have less than 20buyins for the current limit you're playing

4) Get yourself a solid STANDARD LINE game plan. At the lowest limits, that's pretty much enough. I have millions of hands of people to prove this.

5) Learn how to ADAPT from those standard lines and start become a decent thinking player

6) Learn the math behind poker. Nothing too fancy, but a good foundation so u actually understand how things work.

7) PLAY PLAY PLAY. Studying (too much) theory is for dummies and smart a$$ people who are poor.

8) PLAY PLAY PLAY and stop with ur dumb excuses for not playing. You're not special, your circumstances are not special. If u think u have it hard, i got 10pics of death people, people without legs and arms, people who are ugly as *** who will smile and laugh and tell you how great life is.

9) You don't run bad, and even if u do, nobody gives a ***. Your children will not give a ***, your wife will get fcked (by somebody else) if you complain too much. You have to *** back 100x harder no matter what. That's what winners do.

10) Have $$$, look back and see how ez it was. Listen how others tell you how lucky you got, that they could do it as well (but never will) and that money isn't important in life (bc they will never have it).

Good luck, although you will not need it!

You can be a loser forever if u don't work on ur game so nthg is obvious imo and ur logic is flawed. If OP elected to play recreationally for the past years but has now elected to work on his game, what makes u think he's destined to fail?

1) I agree with other posters to subscribe to one of the video sites if you can learn that way
2) If you have a lot of hand histories saved, try to find the people who have the highest win rates in your database. Look at how they play hands. Look at things like preflop open raise rate from each position, 3b % from each position, 4b% from each position. Look at what types of hands they bet on the flop, turn, river. Study the hand histories ( where they go to showdown ) of the winners at the stakes you play and you will learn a lot.
3) Play low enough stakes that you can afford to keep playing while you are learning. Create a bankroll strategy ( e.g., you need 100 buyins for tournaments or 50 buyins for cash game ) and do not move up in stakes until your bankroll justifies it.
4) Whenever you play try to figure out who is the best person at the table. Try to figure out why they do things they do. When somebody you are playing against is giving you a really hard time, try to figure out what they are doing that makes it so hard. Then figure out whether you can apply the same things in your own game.
5) As you play more you figure out certain plays that tend to work a very high % of the time. You incorporate more and more of these plays and the game gets easier.
6) If you want to play tournaments, you need to understand how to adjust your play based on your stack size, effective stack size at table, stage in the tournament, payout structure. It's a lot of things to think about. I think it's better to start with low buy in sitngos and learn how to crush those.
7) Learn short stack all in ranges. Once you have that down, learn how to resteal ( what hands you should be shoving over an initial raise ) based on raiser's position, remaining players to act, raiser's stats, your stack size, etc.

I hate watching videos and I learn primarily by playing live and just watching the best players and trying to understand why they are doing what they do. But I think video sites are great for most people.

Don't pay for coaching. You are at a level where all the general advice from the well known video sites should be sufficient to improve your game.

Congrats Mo,

Just returned from Las Vegas. Played in the WSOP Colossus and Millionaire Maker Tournaments along with a multitude of other cash and satellite games. Preparing to return in a couple of days.

I had been working on improving my poker studies, the players I compete with live and the players I discuss the game with.

While at WSOP I spoke with Jonathan Little, he suggested the poker training forum Red Chip.

On the "Tunein Radio" app - Smart Poker Study Podcast has proven to be helpful too.

Upon return I realized how much I needed to increase my studies of the game and have become energized to increase my efforts.

Remember, Failure is not an option, NEVER GIVE UP!

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the responses.

I am just weeks away from meeting my daughter (my first).

Haven't been playing very much but have been following a lot of the live tourneys (live streams) at the WSOP. One thing I have noticed is I do have some very basic knowledge of the game but the desire to advance my game has never been so strong.

I have a coach that ill be using who has kept in touch and encouraged me and has given me a very good hourly rate. Literally 30% of what others were offering and recommended a step by step program so to speak on my current stats etc etc.

Ill be a stay at home dad and plan to read and watch poker training sites when the time is right. Obviously my daughter has priority and Ill see how I go with that which I am obviously very excited about.

Thanks again and ill keep you guys posted when I have my next session.

I just requested my last hand history from stars. See below and feel free to comment!

Hold'em (Real Money):

1999 hands played and saw flop:
- 36 times out of 268 while in small blind (13%)
- 60 times out of 272 while in big blind (22%)
- 152 times out of 1459 in other positions (10%)
- a total of 248 times out of 1999 (12%)

Pots won at showdown - 30 out of 63 (48%)
Pots won without showdown - 196

I literally just joined 2+2 just to post on this thread, to the OP i just wanted to say, dont quit, if you enjoy playing the game then just play for the enjoyment and dont worry about the results, play within ur limits and just enjoy the game again, to be brutally honest with u mate, if u havent improved in 10 years then youre probably not tht interested in getting any better, may sound odd but if youre just happy to sit at a table and play a few pots, the studying part of it probably doesnt appeal, Iwas a losing player for years, far longer than I should have been due to own laziness, in the first 4 years of playing poker I probably read 3 maybe 4 books, I hardly ever reviewed any of my sessions, my point is mate, unless u take the game serious and work hard away from the table u are going to lose, the game is constantly evolving and a "solid" game ten years ago might not wrk today or 2/3 years ago for tht matter, poker is like a treadmill, u gotta keep moving forward or else u just fail, but all tht being said youd be amazed how quickly u can improve once u understand what u have to do and apply urself too it, ur a human being with a very powerful brain, it doesnt take a lot, in the grand scheme of things to get a solid grasp and undertstanding of a 52 card game, im not a coach and certainly not gd enough to be one but if I was to offer any advice to anybody struggling with poker tht would be, apply urself to the game, It may sound vague but until ur willing to put the effort in ur going to fail long term, harsh truth but understanding tht will help

gd luck to u fella and I hope u keep playing the game, poker is a shrinking economy and I hate to see people quit the game

Headed up to Syd and played a the APL million main event but couldn't get the job done and was out at the end of day one. Played some cash and was very in tune with what was going on made some serious cash for two longer cash sessions of about 10 hours each.

Def noticed some spots where reading etc made it a straight forward play and reaped the results was very impressed with how I played overall and my overall feel for the pace/ tread of the table.
